C-DAC'S activities are consolidated in the thematic areas of High Performance Computing (HPC) and grid computing; multilingual computing and heritage computing; software technologies including FOSS (free and open software solutions); professional electronics including VLSI (very large-scale integration) and embedded systems; cyber security and cyber forensics; health informatics; and education and training.
C-DAC's achievements in the last one year in these areas are given below:
HPC and grid computing
A supercomputing system named PARAM Yuva was delivered, which ranked 68 in the Top500 Supercomputing list released in November 2008. PARAM Sheersh supercomputing facility at the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, was inaugurated.
The foundation phase of the grid Garuda is nearing completion, with five sets of applications: disaster management, molecular docking, computational fluid dynamics, collaborative learning and climate modelling. It will be linked with the National Knowledge Network. The Indian Grid Certification Authority was inaugurated.
Multilingual computing and heritage computing
Under the National Roll-Out Plan, CDs containing software tools and fonts for 12 Indian languages have been released, those for six additional languages are ready for release, and those for the four remaining official Indian languages will be completed in six months.
Research in the following contemporary areas of language computing through consortium partnerships with premier academic and research institutions (and select industrial partners) is being carried out, with many in advanced stages of pilot testing and deployment: EILMT (English to Indian Language Machine Translation system); IL-ILMT (Indian Language to Indian Language Machine Translation system); information extraction/retrieval tools and technologies; Cross Lingual Information Extraction/Retrieval (CLIR) tools and technologies; and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Optical Handwriting Recognition (OHR) tools and technologies.
Software technologies including FOSS
BOSS (Bharat Operating Systems Solutions) is a localised Indian distribution of GNU/Linux. It is localised to 18 Indian languages and has been deployed in over 200,000 personal computers in various institutions and organisations across the nation. Support centres with appropriate support models have been set up. The National Service Delivery Gateway (NSDG) Go Live was inaugurated. The India Development Gateway (InDG) web portal was launched.
Cyber security and cyber forensics
CyberCheck Suite was developed, field-tested and supplied to several law enforcement agencies. Several cyber crime cases have been analysed using it. Face recognition software was developed and released for beta testing. The first version of the Malware Prevention System was completed. An adaptive Intrusion Detection System was released and deployed at the Intelligence Bureau and in the Army and the Navy.
The beta version of Software Development Kits (SDKs) for international health care standards was released.
Telemedicine facilities based on telemedicine software developed by C-DAC was set up in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and two north-eastern States. It was also deployed in Ethiopia. AyuSoft, a software package for ayurveda, has been deployed at more than 200 locations in India and abroad. It was selected for the Innovation 2000 award by IIT Bombay’s alumni association. Cure@home, an integrative medical informatics solution for the common man, was launched in the north-eastern region.
Education and training
C-DAC's education and training programmes are based on the finishing school model. The various courses offered are designed to produce industry-ready professionals for the IT industry. The Prepare Future programme was launched last year to train engineering faculties in the advanced domain of IT.
