  CLOUD COMPUTING AT CDAC

CDAC has established a Private cloud environment to offer basic cloud services such as Infrastructure, Platform, and Software service to Government and SMEs.

The primary focus of Research and Development activities are development of Open Source Cloud Middleware, Virtualization and Management tools, providing an end to end security framework for Cloud, achieving Interoperability among various cloud service providers.

CDAC has come out with complete open source free software suite called "Meghdooth" for establishing cloud with value added features that converts the data centre to cloud centre, focussing on porting of e-Governance applications. Migration of Government applications (State Govt. data Centers and their applications) and SMEs (ERP) into Cloud are some of the notable mile-stones achieved.

C-DAC has successfully completed various implementation and consultancy services to Government and SMEs for establishing Cloud, porting existing applications into Cloud and Development of cloud enabled applications.

Various customized corporate training programs are offered for corporate, academicians, researchers, students and Government officials.

One of the remarkable activities ongoing is Integration of Private Cloud computing environment with existing Garuda Grid (India's National Grid Computing Initiative).

PROJECTS

Meghdooth

The outcome of the group is an open source free software suite called Meghdooth for establishing cloud with value added features that converts the data centre to cloud centre.

Meghdooth - A free and open source cloud stack developed by CDAC Chennai is a one stop solution for implementing Cloud environment. This offers single middleware bundle that incorporates all pre-requisites with API for easy deployment of multi instance user appliances.

Meghdooth offers various features in cloud environment such as Platform and Infrastructure as a service (PaaS and IaaS), On demand dynamic provisioning, Metering & Monitoring, Graphical Installation of Middleware stack, Web based Management of Cloud resources, Provision for deployment of multi instance user appliances, Customized Elasticity, Web service based management of cloud, High Availability, Enhanced Security across layers.

Constituents of Stack

Meghdooth stack consists of Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) with Kernel 3.0 as the base operating system; Xen 4.0 as Hypervisor; Eucalyptus 2.0 as Middleware; Hyperic HQ as tool for Monitoring and Pound-2.5-1 as software Load balancer. The functionalities such as Elasticity is provided by CDAC Scripts.

The Meghdooth Cloud server consists of Eucalyptus Cloud controller, Eucalyptus Cluster controller, Hyperic Monitoring Server, Load Balancer, Cloud Elasticity Manager, Web based Cloud Management and Administration Interface. The Meghdooth Cloud VM Host Node consists of Eucalyptus Node controller, Xen Hypervisor, Virtual Machines, Libvirt APIs.

Value addition to open source tools

Megdooth incorporates various value added functionalities to the open source tools such as Elasticity component integrated with Eucalyptus, Provision for hosting windows instances, High Availability to the cloud environment including physical machines and virtual machines, Web Service Interface for management of Cloud, Web Application Firewall, Provision for deploying user licensed software, Metering and billing solutions, Self servicing portal, Graphical Installation component of Middleware.

Cloud Security Framework

The Cloud security group focuses on providing an end to end security framework for Cloud environment across all layers.

Interoperability

Activities are on-going to facilitate interoperability among different clouds established by various cloud service providers in different underlying technology. The objective behind this work is when one private cloud implemented by one service provider, say Meghdooth face lack of resources, the cloud resources can be fetched from other clouds, implemented with different cloud technology. Initially, interoperability is achieved between Meghdooth Cloud and VMWARE cloud on a testbed established at CDAC Chennai.

Garuda Grid - Cloud Integration

One of the remarkable activities ongoing is Integration of Private Cloud computing environment with existing Garuda Grid (India's National Grid Computing Initiative).

TRAINING

Various customized corporate training programs are offered by the group for corporate, academicians, researchers, students and Government officials. Conducted various technical workshops, Guest Lectures, seminars in Engineering colleges, Universities and in various International Conferences such as IIT - Madras; Anna University, Chennai; Vellore Institute of Technology etc...Two series of "Certificate course on Cloud computing" is conducted in CDAC Chennai in collaboration with ACTS. Handled corporate training to Y3 Technologies with participants from Chennai and Singapore.

SUCCESSFUL DEPLOYMENTS OF MEGHDOOTH/CONSULTANCY SERVICES

GOVERNMENT OF KERALA - KSITM

C-DAC Chennai successfully completed consultancy for Kerala Government's KSITM for porting their payroll application SPARK into Cloud as PoC. This project is taken up jointly with IIITM-K, Trivandrum for KSITM, Trivandrum. The scope of this work is to port the payroll application SPARK into the cloud to explore the functionalities of Cloud. The application is deployed into the private cloud environment and demonstrated the elasticity features to the application.

GOVERNMENT OF CHATTISGARH - CHiPS, Raipur,

Cloud test-bed is established in CHiPS, Raipur, using Meghdooth Stack and few of their applications are deployed into the cloud with successful demonstration of various features of cloud such as elasticity, metered usage, optimal utilization of the resources.

GOVERNMENT OF TAMILNADU - TNSDC, Chennai

Meghdooth stack is deployed successfully in Tamil Nadu State Data Centre, Chennai. Few applications from National Informatics Centre (NIC), Chennai and from the Tamil Nadu Health Department are ported successfully into the cloud. A team of officials from NIC, Chennai; ELCOT, TamilNadu; SDC, Chennai has evaluated the cloud establishment.

SME Sector - Y3 Technologies, Chennai and Singapore.

Y3 Technologies, Logistics management company has established Meghdooth cloud environment with one cluster in Chennai and one in Singapore running in production mode with their Logistics Management application ported onto it.
