Preamble

The world's dependence on oil and gas is increasing as global economies and infrastructure continue to rely heavily on petroleum-based products. Discussions of when world oil and gas production will peak seem to be on the periphery, even amid shrinking availability of oil and a weakened global economy. Hence, lot of technological advancements and work is being done in the domain of seismic imaging which is used to monitor and delineate the earth’s subsurface structure to locate the presence of oil and gas resources. Over the past decade, seismology entered a new era. Solving complex wave equations on large supercomputers, accurate and complete simulations for heterogeneous earth models became a reality – replacing exact solutions for layered earth models.

C-DAC has been developing indigenous supercomputing systems and applications since its inception in 1988 and possess extensive in-house expertise required for development and technology transfer of various state-of-the-art hardware and software components. Considering the rising demand and potential capabilities of seismic imaging, C-DAC has already identified it as one of its mission areas under National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).

Seismic Data Processing @C-DAC

Advanced seismic data processing algorithms are computationally intensive and requires HPC for achieving efficient results in optimal time. Seismic Data Processing (SDP), HPC-Scientific and Engineering Applications Group at C-DAC, Pune, established in 1992 mainly works on High Performance Computing (HPC) seismic applications. Having expert capabilities in both seismic domain and HPC, the SDP group at C-DAC is involved in active research and development, parallelization, and optimization of advanced compute intensive algorithms such as Seismic Inversion, Migration and Modeling. The in-house HPC software developed by SDP are SeisRTM, SeisAcoMod, SeisKDM, SeisShMod, SeisLTFD etc. The group develops software using parallel processing techniques such as MPI and OpenMP, compatible with multi and many core processors available at PARAM series of supercomputers. We have attended and published our research works in many reputed National and International journals and conferences.

SDP group have been working in collaboration with GEOPIC, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas corporation), Dehradun, India, NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute), Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee and did many R&D projects with funding from Department of Science & Technology, Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India. We have been part of many projects of national importance and currently involved in the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) funded consortia project – SeisRTM, under NSM application subgroup ’Geophysics and Oil exploration’. We are open for more collaborations in such research areas.

About Workshop

C-DAC Pune is organizing a workshop on “HPC in Seismic Imaging - Seeing Below the Earth's Surface” to discuss seismic imaging related techniques and gather HPC requirements of the E&P sector. In this workshop C-DAC’s work in seismic imaging domain, HPC infrastructure built under National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), upcoming exascale plan etc. will be showcased. There will be expert talks on seismic imaging, inversion and various other topics followed by a panel discussion. The objective of this workshop is to bring together experts from oil and gas companies, institutions, and academia to share their knowledge, understand the expectations from all stakeholders, look at present offerings, identify and discuss the challenges ahead, and create a framework to devise future solutions in seismic processing along with suitable HPC infrastructure.
