Make in India: Advancing Indigenization of Technology

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has taken a major step towards achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India – Make for the World’ by transferring indigenous technology on Smart Energy Meters and Electric Vehicle Chargers to industry partners. On February 21, 2023, Secretary of MeitY, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, witnessed the transfer of technology at an event attended by officials from C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram, and other dignitaries.

Smart Energy Meter

The C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram, developed a Smart Energy Meter as part of the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) program. This device is based on Indian standards and suitable for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). It is also compatible with Smart Grid Communication Technologies and supports Distributed Generations (DG). The Smart Meter’s technology was transferred to Pragati Electrocom Private Limited, represented by Anil Mahashur, Chairman, and Virendra Kumar, Managing Director.

Electric Vehicle Charger

The C-DAC also developed an AC Charger as per Bharat EV AC Charger (BEVC-AC001) specifications and AIS-138 standards. The chargers are customizable to address various customer requirements. The technology for these chargers was transferred to two industry partners – M/s Electronic System represented by Nimish Swadia, Director, and M/s Vellore Electronics and Systems Private Limited, represented by S. Nagarajan, Founder & MD.

The Transfer of Technology event witnessed the industry partners being trained on the manufacturing process and the various components of these devices. They were also given an overview of the testing and certification process required to ensure the quality and safety of these devices. The industry partners will now work towards mass-producing these devices, which will help reduce the country’s dependence on imports and contribute to the vision of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India.

The transfer of technology on Smart Energy Meters and Electric Vehicle Chargers is a significant step towards indigenisation of technology in India. With the demand for these devices expected to increase manyfold in the coming years, it is vital to have domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Transfer of Technology event is an example of the government’s commitment to supporting indigenous technology and its efforts towards creating a self-reliant India.
