C-DAC and Intel partner to setup the first oneAPI Center of Excellence in Asia Pacific region to help engage the HPC and AI student community in India and across the world

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is the premier R&D organization of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for carrying out R&D in IT, Electronics and associated areas. Along with Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, C-DAC is implementing the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), a national initiative of the Government of India steered jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Department of Science and Technology, to enhance the capacity and the capability in the area of High Performance Computing (HPC) in the country.

Setting up HPC facilities of varying capacities, development of HPC applications of national importance, research and development leading to Exascale systems and training of HPC aware manpower are the key objectives of the NSM. Training the users of HPC system with current and upcoming parallel computing frameworks is an activity being carried on continual basis.

C-DAC is pleased to partner with Intel to setup oneAPI Center of Excellence, the first of its kind in Asia Pacific region, to impart training on standards-based oneAPI programming model. This will benefit the users of HPC systems deployed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) at various institutes across the country, who will be then be able to use oneAPI as an effective tool for their research work. The NSM nodal centers for training in HPC and AI will also include oneAPI programming model and tools as a part of their training offerings. The Advanced Computing Training School (ACTS) of C-DAC plans to include oneAPI in the curriculum of HPC related Post Graduate Diploma courses that it conducts.

Expressing satisfaction, E. Magesh, Director General, C-DAC said, "We are happy to take our partnership with Intel, yet another step forward. With heterogeneous computing becoming order of the day, oneAPI will ease the efforts related to targeting the same algorithm for a variety of architectures based on CPUs and accelerators based on GPUs and FPGA. We would be leveraging on our connect with users of NSM facilities and through NSM Nodal centers, to equip them with knowledge of oneAPI and its usage, so that they are able to get optimum performance from the platform they are using".

About oneAPI

oneAPI is an open, unified and cross-architecture programming model for CPUs and accelerator architectures (GPUs, FPGAs, and others). Based on open standards, the programming model simplifies software development and delivers uncompromised performance for accelerated compute without proprietary lock-in, while enabling the integration of legacy code. With oneAPI, developers can choose the best architecture for the specific problem they are trying to solve without needing to rewrite software for the next architecture and platform.

About NSM

National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) is an initiative of the Government of India to empower India's national academic and R&D institutions across the country by installing High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities. Indigenous development of HPC applications of national relevance and development of HPC aware human resource are the other significant deliverables of the mission. The Mission intends to bring supercomputing within the reach of the large scientific community in the country and enable the country with a capacity of solving multi-disciplinary grand challenge problems. The Mission is being steered jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
