Brainstorming Session on National Operating System Mission

In continuation of its commitment to pioneering national technology initiatives, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing Chennai, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, organized a high-level Brainstorming Session on the National Operating System Mission (NOSM) on May2nd, 2025. The event was held at A M Turing Hall, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras, and brought together a diverse group of stakeholders including representatives from academia, industry, and government institutions. This initiative is a significant step toward achieving technological self-reliance in core digital infrastructure, particularly in operating system technologies.

The session commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. Ch. A. S. Murthy, Centre Head, C-DAC Kolkata, who emphasized the strategic importance of indigenous OS development in safeguarding national cyber sovereignty. This was followed by a comprehensive presentation by Dr. D. Ethirajan, Centre Head, C-DAC Chennai, who laid out C-DAC's vision for the NOSM, outlining its objectives, roadmap, and the collaborative ecosystem being envisioned to make it a success.

Dr. Gopalakrishnan, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras, shared valuable insights on scalable OS architectures and the role of academia in driving foundational technology research under the NOSM initiative. C-DAC sincerely thanks him for his enthusiastic support and collaborative spirit in shaping the mission's direction.

Prominent industry players including Zoho, ESDS, TCS, Jio, ELVAS, and C-DAC Bangalore contributed valuable insights through their presentations. They highlighted current challenges and innovations in developing secure, scalable, and efficient operating systems that are tailored to India's unique needs. Their participation underscored the strong industry commitment to supportingindigenous technology missions.

A robust academic presence was felt with contributions from reputed institutions such as IIT Hyderabad, Pondicherry University, Digital University Kerala, SRM University, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Palakkad. These institutions showcased research advancements and offered perspectives on curriculum integration, joint R&D efforts, and fostering a skilled talent pool aligned with NOSM goals. Their participation further reinforced the need for academia-industry-government collaborationin driving innovation.

Adding to the event's prestige was the presence of key dignitariesfrom the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Ms. Sunita Verma, Scientist 'G' and Group Coordinator, R&D Division, MeitY, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the strategic national relevance of NOSM and MeitY's role in nurturing such initiatives. Shri. Magesh Ethirajan, Director General, C-DAC, also addressed the gathering, stressing on the pivotal role of public-private partnerships and long-term vision in realizing India's digital aspirations.

The brainstorming session facilitated deep-dive discussions on architectural, hardware-software integration, and open-source adoption strategies. It also included an interactive participants' discussion session that brought diverse viewpoints and ideas to the forefront. The event concluded with a valedictory session that encapsulated key takeaways and called for continued dialogue and action. With its comprehensive coverage and strategic participation, the NOSM brainstorming session marks a significant milestone in the journey toward a secure, self-reliant digital India.
