Lecture on Fluidity of Gender

Mohali

March 10, 2026

As part of the celebrations marking International Women's Day, C-DAC) Mohali organized a special lecture for its staff on the theme "Fluidity of Gender" on March 10th, 2026. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Archana R. Singh, Professor at the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The session aimed to promote awareness and encourage dialogue on evolving perspectives of gender identity, inclusivity, and social sensitivity in contemporary workplaces.

The event began with a warm welcome to the guest speaker by Shri Kuldeep Dwivedi and Dr. Suneet Madan, who extended their greetings to the speaker and the participants.

In her address, Dr. Singh explained that gender is not merely a biological identity but also asocial and cultural construct expressed through behaviour, roles, and personal identity. Shehighlighted that traditional gender binaries are gradually giving way to more inclusiveunderstandings of gender as fluid and evolving.

Using examples from literature and cinema, Dr. Singh illustrated how portrayals of masculinity and femininity in Indian society have changed over time. She noted that earlier narratives often portrayed masculinity as rigid and emotionally restrained, whereas contemporary perspectives increasingly recognize the importance of emotional expression, empathy, and balance between traditionally masculine and feminine traits.

She emphasized that acknowledging gender fluidity does not imply changing one's identity but rather recognizing the diverse qualities present within every individual. According to her, fostering such understanding helps build more inclusive, respectful, and empathetic social and professional environments.

The lecture witnessed enthusiastic participation from the scientific, technical, and administrative staff of C-DAC Mohali. The session concluded with an engaging interaction with the audience, where participants reflected on the relevance of gender sensitivity and inclusivity in modern workplaces.

The event concluded with the presentation of a token of appreciation by Dr. Sanjay Sood, Scientist G and HoD DHID and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Suneet Madan, Scientist F and HoD HCID.
