DAC CINE centre located at IIT Guwahati engaged in a discussion with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Shillong on February7th, 2025 regarding leveraging the power of quantum computing for better disaster prediction and management. Shri. Nagendra Singh, Scientist � B representing C-DAC, CINE was welcomed by Shri ThangjalalLhouvum, Head, IMD Shillong, along with officers and staff.
During his visit, Shri. Nagendra Singh delivered an insightful presentation on Quantum Algorithms for Natural Disaster Management, highlighting the potential of quantum computing in enhancing disaster prediction and response mechanisms. He discussed on the abilities of quantum computing to process vast datasets at unprecedented speeds, significantly strengthening disaster preparedness and enabling authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate risks effectively. The discussion focused on how advanced computational models can improve the accuracy and efficiency of forecasting escape routes and predicting natural calamities such as cyclones, floods, and landslides particularly concerning the North Eastern Region.
IMD Shillong expressed a strong interest in collaborating with C-DAC to develop research initiatives tailored to the region's specific climatic challenges. The proposed collaboration aims to explore how quantum-driven forecasting models can enhance resilience against natural disasters by providing more reliable and timely predictions. Both organizations recognized the potential of this partnership in setting new benchmarks for technology-driven disaster management in India with transformative impact of quantum computing in mitigating the effects of natural disasters and agreed to explore joint research initiatives.
The interaction concluded on a positive note with a tea session, where both teams further discussed the roadmap for joint research and future engagements. The visit underscored the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in leveraging emerging technologies for meteorology and disaster management, paving the way for a long-term partnership between C-DAC and IMD Shillong.
