Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally on the second Tuesday of February to raise awareness and promote safe & responsible use of the internet, particularly among children and young people.
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) celebrated Safer Internet Day on February 10th, 2026. On this occasion, a nationwide awareness campaign was conducted successfully across the country under the overarching theme of “Smart Tech, Safe Choices – Exploring the Safe and Responsible use of AI” with the objective of promoting awareness and educating citizens about the best practices for cyber hygiene, online safety and fostering responsible use of internet and AI. The campaign was organized under the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India in collaboration with NIC, C-DAC, NIELIT, MyGov, NeGD, OCAC and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) / C-DAC Kolkata, various institutions under ISEA & other projects under HRD Division and other voluntary organizations. The entire campaign was coordinated by C-DAC Hyderabad.
Key Highlights
Awareness Workshops: Safer Internet Day witnessed pan-India participation, covering all States and Union Territories, with activities organized at National, State/UT, District, Block & Gram Panchayat levels. 2,859 awareness workshops were conducted across 36 States & UTs covering 634 districts, engaging over 3.73 lakh participants directly, including students, educators, government officials, civil society & industry representatives and citizens.
Online Webinar for Government employees: At the national level, Awareness Session on ‘Staying Safe in the Age of AI’ was organized by C-DAC Hyderabad for the employees of Central Ministries and Departments. Dr. Sanjay Bahl, DG CERT-IN emphasized that every action of a government employee adds to the government’s digital footprints and a coordinated approach, combined with best practices to identify & mitigate AI-generated risks, is essential for strengthening cyber resilience. More than 2,350 participants from various Government organizations attendedthe session.
Public Awareness Campaign and Digital Outreach: The national-level public awareness campaign significantly strengthened mass awareness on cyber hygiene and the responsible use of the internet and AI across multiple local languages. The initiative achieved strong media visibility and widespread engagement across digital platforms, reaching 9.78 crore people through the public awareness campaign and generating an additional 3.95 crore reach across social media platforms, amplifying its nationwide impact.
