C-DAC, Kolkata has taken a pivotal role in advancing field-portable diagnostics with the development and transfer of CoLOSENS, a handheld colorimetric biosensing system for rapid screening of bacterial diarrhoea. This innovation aims to curtail unnecessary antibiotic use by delivering reliable, on-site test results in resource-limited settings.
CoLOSENS was developed, deployed and field tested under the MeitY-funded R&D project "An Affordable Colorimetric Diagnostic Instrument: ColOSENS and Field Validation at Imphal, North-East India." The battery-operated device harnesses DNA aptamer-based receptors and colorimetric signal transduction to detect diarrhoeal pathogens, with results visualized via a smartphone-based graphical interface. Field validation at the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), Imphal confirmed its accuracy and robustness.
During the TecVerse 2025 event at the Manekshaw Centre Auditorium, New Delhi, on June 27th, 2025, C-DAC Kolkata formalized the technology transfer of CoLOSENS to S2M Lifescience Pvt Ltd. This partnership will accelerate device certification, mass manufacturing, and commercialization, paving the way for widespread deployment across India and beyond.
The Transfer of Technology agreement was signed by Dr. Murty Ch.A.S, Scientist G & Centre Head, C-DAC Kolkata, and Shri. Tanmay Mahapatra, CEO of S2M Lifescience Pvt Ltd, in the presence of Shri. S Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology; Shri. Amitesh Kumar Sinha,IAS, Additional Secretary, MeitY; Shri. Magesh E., Director General, C-DAC; Shri.
