January 24, 2025
C-DAC Pune, under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), recently concluded a successful one-day online user training workshop on "µ2Mech: A Software Package Combining Microstructure Modeling and Mechanical Property Prediction" on January 24th, 2025. The workshop provided hands-on training to researchers, educators, and students in materials science and computational chemistry, equipping them with the skills to effectively utilize µ2Mechfor microstructure modeling and mechanical property prediction.
µ2Mech, an advanced software tool developed by IIT Kanpur under the NSM, combines Thermo-Calc data and phase-field modeling to simulate microstructure evolution. It then uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) to analyze the elastic properties of binary alloys, seamlessly integrating with OOF2.
Key Speakers and Workshop Highlights
The workshop featured prominent experts in the field:
- Dr. Rajdip Mukherjee, Associate Professor, IIT Kanpur
- Dr. Kaushik Das, Associate Professor, IIEST Shibpur
- Dr. Somnath Bhowmick, Associate Professor, IIT Kanpur
- Shri. Albert Linda, PhD student, IIT Kanpur
The workshop combined theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on sessions to create an engaging learning experience. Participants explored µ2Mech's core functionalities through demonstrations, case studies, and interactive discussions.
Workshop Agenda
- Introduction to µ2Mech: Overview of the software's capabilities and key concepts.
- Demonstration:Practical usage of µ2Mech and OOF2 with test datasets.
- Hands-on Session:Application-based exercises to reinforce learning and real-world utility.
- Q&A and Feedback:Open discussion to clarify concepts and enhance future sessions.
- Conclusion and Next Steps:Recap of workshop insights and discussion on future applications.
Impact and Future Prospects
The workshop fostered collaboration through a dedicated µ2Mech discussion forum and mailing list for ongoing engagement. Plans are underway to make µ2Mech accessible on all NSM-HPC systems, broadening its reach and impact within the computational research community. This initiative represents a significant advancement in empowering scientists with cutting-edge tools for materials research. With continued support, µ2Mech is poised to become an invaluable resource for researchers and industry professionals.
